Make Your Own Bento and Miso Soup at Traditional Japanese House
(Optional Tour: Shopping at Farmers Market)
We will cook Onigiri (Rice Ball) Obento lunch at an 85- year old traditional Japanese house. You will cook miso soup with fresh veggies from the local market, learn how to make onigiri, and pack your own bento box as you like! You can also use leaves from the garden to garnish your box. Lunchtime will follow.
You can take home the empty bamboo bark lunch box as a souvenir.
To maximize your experience, we recommend adding the optional tour with our guide. Our guide will take you to Kamakura’s iconic vegetable market, well known as the “Renbai” by locals. Talk to the local farmers to choose ingredients for your Obento. After shopping, we will move to Suetei’s home-base kitchen in Kita-Kamakura. A petite guided walk in Kita-Kamakura dotted with many Zen temples is a bonus!

About the Instructor
Suetei
Suetei believes that using seasonal ingredients is the key to making her dishes magical. From her kitchen in Kita Kamakura, she brings out daily special bento lunchboxes, filled with locally acquired, fresh seasonal ingredients. Her bentos have captured the hearts (and stomachs) of many a Kamakuraian. By popular request, she started workshops teaching how to make the Japanese staples i.e. pickled plums and miso. Her knowledge of yakuzen cuisine adds a special flavor to her dishes.
Venue: Takara-no-niwa
Takara-no-niwa, the "Garden of Treasures," is a workshop space and kiln in a traditional folk house just 12 minutes from JR Kita-Kamakura station. At the end of a narrow path leading up from Jochi-ji Temple, surrounded by forest, it is a place with the kind of deep history and rich, the living culture you can only find in Kamakura. Come discover your own treasure.
